Animal cancer association hosts first annual beauty contest
Proceeds will help with data research to help dogs with cancer
The first annual Meneer Boerseun and Miss Boernooi contest was held this past weekend at Lavender Kontreimark.
South African Animal Cancer Association’s (SAACA) CEO Munnik Marais said the event wasn’t just about raising funds but also to raise awareness and inform people of what the association does.
“The funds go to SAACA, so that we are able to do our day-to-day work.
“It’s the first time we have done a pageant. We were hoping for 20 entries but had a great response, so hopefully next year we will get even more,” Marais said.
He thanked their main sponsor for making the event a success, adding that if it wasn’t for the help of Zenobi Artist Management the event wouldn’t have been possible.
“Zenobi sponsored all the category winners with R1 500 cash as well as a photo session.
“The South African Institute for Cosmetics contributed prizes worth over R7 000 as our second sponsor.”
Marais said all the proceeds of the event would go to the organisation to fund extensive research on animals suffering from cancer.
Miss South Africa 2022 finalist Marita Jordaan was one of the judges.
She told Rekord that she felt honoured to have been asked to be part of the event as it gave her an opportunity to witness the showcasing of the amazing talents of young people.
Jordaan said it was an enjoyable day for her and overwhelming to see how fearless young people were on the stage.
“It was amazing to see how courageous they are, and how bold and brave to be themselves.
“It was inspiring to see them being authentic, being true to themselves and embracing who they are,” she added.
SAACA is the first organisation in Africa to focus on cancer in animals and its main objective is to work with the University of Pretoria’s veterinary centre at Onderstepoort.
It also wants to fund animal sterilisations in rural areas and educate the public on its work.
