Centurion rank not yet handed over to taxi alliance
This is despite it being operational since May last year.
The Tshwane metro hasn’t officially handed the Centurion taxi rank over to the Centurion Taxi Alliance yet.
This was despite it being operational since May last year.
Taxi Alliance representative Sboniso Ndlovu told Rekord that the rank still belonged to the metro and they do not have any binding contract with them as yet.
“We don’t have any lease agreement as yet,” he said.
“If we want to do certain things, we have to ask the metro before we can do them.”
Despite this, the Tshwane metro embarked on the refurbishment of the Lyttelton and Rosslyn taxi ranks.
Road and transport MMC Dikeledi Selowa said the refurbishment of these facilities was the City’s way of marking and celebrating transport month.
“Overall, the City has invested over R8-million to refurbish seven transport facilities, which include these two taxi ranks that have been handed over. Five other facilities will be handed over soon,” said Selowa.
“The scope of the refurbishment work varied per facility. But it largely entails the construction of ablution facilities, access roads, parking and loading bays, security guardhouses and perimeter fencing, refurbishment of trading stalls, and other basic amenities.”

October was officially declared transport month in 2005.
The month is intended to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy.
It wants to encourage participation from civil society and businesses, including the provision of a safe and more reliable transport system in the country.
The industry contributes 4.65% to the GDP while 83% of people, who use public transport, travel by minibus taxi (up from 66% in 2015).
The month allowed the department to showcase transport infrastructure services in aviation, maritime; public transport, and roads.
The month was also used to further advance the country’s road safety initiatives.
