It was deemed unsafe for motorists and pedestrians. Local residents ignore warnings to stay away from the scene to satisfy their curiosity, with some parents even bringing their children to see the sinkhole.

The metro took to social media to announce the closing of the road on Tuesday, November 1.

The metro notified motorists around Valhalla in Centurion to avoid using the Snake Valley Road (M24) between Old Johannesburg (R101) and Fjord Road.

According to the metro, the above-mentioned part of the road was closed after large cracks surfaced on the road last Thursday.

“At first, only one lane of the road was affected but it later extended across the roadway to affect all four lanes,” reads the statement.

The metro said during observation last Friday and Saturday, it was noticed that the affected area increased both in size and depth. A sinkhole was then declared.

Rekord reporters on the scene saw that the sinkhole has extended across the entire road and into a nearby property. Local residents ignored warnings to stay away from the scene to satisfy their curiosity, with some parents even bringing their children to see the sinkhole.

“The sinkhole affected area extends from inside the military property, across the road and up to the verge on the southern side.”

The metro declared the road unsafe for both motorists and pedestrians.

“The City urges all members of the public around Valhalla to exercise caution in the area and map alternative routes during their daily travels.”

The City said it was currently investigating the extent of the sinkhole to prepare for road rehabilitation.
