Support your matric

Parents form a crucial part of a matric's support network during exams.

The class of 2022 are already well on their way with preparations for their final exams. Along with the suppressed excitement come stress, anxiety and perhaps even depression.

There are however many things a parent can do to assist a child in dealing with this experience, especially the mental and physical fatigue that comes with writing exams.

– Keep reminding your child of the end goal

Help your child visualise their plans and match the dream with the daily performance of writing the exam. Keep focusing on the day’s performance and putting the previous papers behind them.

– Help them avoid cramming – make and stick to a roster

Encourage your child to keep putting in a solid, consistent effort by planning in advance and sticking to the plan. Avoid the temptation to take time off the plan to cram later – we all know that could be disastrous.

– Keep going

Breaking up the workload into small, easier to complete sections, gives the child an attainable goal. Now really is the time to eat the proverbial elephant one bite at a time.

– Avoid becoming negative

It is so easy to become downhearted when one paper was difficult and the outcome expected to be bad. As a parent, keep your child’s focus on taking the next paper with a positive approach.

– Ensure enough exercise and a change of scenery

Every learner needs a break every now and again. Take them for a walk, give them a special treat during downtime, or do something new. Remind them that there’s a whole new world waiting for them on the other side of the last sentence of the last paper.

– Support, support support

This remains the basis of everything a parent can do for their matric learner. Emotional, physical, mental support. And if something goes wrong, find a way to address it while still supporting your teen all the way.
