She won three awards after writing two books last year.

A young author has been reaping the rewards of her hard work after penning down her hardships and life experiences into a book.

Lerato Phakoe (19) of Soshanguve has been collecting awards since 2021 following the release of her book For The Sake Of Living and The Kindness Paid With Pain.

She has managed to collect three awards in her young promising career and won her latest one on Saturday, October 29.

The awards are Best Creative at MIA CWLA award 2022, Outstanding Creative at Vita Basadi Award and an honorary African Honouree award 2021.

Phakoe said winning awards proves that hard work pays off.

“It tops all my achievements and gives me every reason to never look back. Being an award-winning author completes me,” she said.

Phakoe’s latest achievements don’t come as a surprise after eight years of hard work as a writer.

She said she was inspired to be a writer by Gcina Mhlophe who authored the story books she read in school.

“I used to look at her work and say that one day I will use my talent to heal the world,” she said.

She said her motivation to write books comes from the lessons that life exposed her to.

“I am someone who takes time to observe amid hardships. This is how I can pen down all the lessons and experiences I have experienced in my young writing career,” she said.

Like many authors who struggle to put their work on the shelf, Phakoe also had her fair share of challenges in terms of sales but overcame them.

“One of the challenges I have faced in my journey so far was low sales and poor marketing, but for now I am happy to say I overcame them.”
