Heavy rain causes flooding in Centurion, some roads closed

Wierda Road over the N14 highway is sagging due to a sinkhole.

Heavy and persistent rainfall resulted an various roads and low-lying bridges in Centurion being flooded.

Although the exact rainfall could not yet be confirmed, Gauteng Weather tweeted that they have received reports of over 100mm overnight in the Centurion area.

Reports of flooding across large areas have been received but according to emergency services no injuries have been reported as yet. According to the metro, the situation is especially dire in Wierda Road over the N14 Highway where the road is sagging due to a developing sinkhole.

 

 

 

 

Ward councillor Ina Strijdom told Rekord that local police, the Tshwane metro and members of community policing forums are at the scene and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is on the way to the site. Meanwhile she advised road users to make use of alternative roads.

 

There is also extensive flooding on Rabie and End Street and at various low lying bridges. Strijdom said the Centurion Lake and the area around Super Sport Park flooded and the situation is getting worse.

Strijdom urged residents to stay away from any low-lying bridges and avoid using the following roads.

 

-End Street

– Lyttelton Road

-Blackwood Road

-Rabie Road

-Wierda Road

-Lenchen Avenue

The Tshwane Emergency Services and Tshwane Metro Police are monitoring the known hotspots and effecting road closures as may be required.

One vehicle attempted to cross a flooded road and got stuck near Supersport Cricket Stadium, Centurion.

The occupants managed to escape unharmed.
