Body of drowned 11-year-old boy found in Apies River

Divers searched for the boy from Monday after he drowned at the river where he was reportedly swimming with four other kids.

Police divers have retrieved the body of an 11-year-old boy today who was reported as having drowned in the Apies River in Tshwane.

Police and Tshwane emergency medical services began their search on Monday.
The boy was certified dead on the scene.

The boy and his friends, aged around 11 and 12 from the Marokolong village, were swimming when he was swept away by the water.

The other boys ran back to the village to get help.

Temba police station commander Brigadier Johannes Tau said he was saddened by the incident.

He urged parents to warn their children about playing near rivers and dams.

“Parents should monitor their children’s movements and know their whereabouts at all times.

“Rivers and dams are very dangerous. People should not take it for granted because even older people can easily be swept away by the water,” he said.

He applauded the rescue teams from Roodeplaat K9 academy, West Rand, Johannesburg and Soshanguve K9 for not giving up on the search in difficult circumstances.
