Protests shut down N1 ahead of Chris Hani killer release

The highway has been reopened allowing for traffic flow, said the JMPD.

Traffic on the N1 highway at Olifantsfontein Road was brought to a stand-still this morning with all lanes in both directions closed.

The highway has since reopened.

The stand-still was due to protest action against the release of struggle icon Chris Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus. The EFF marched to the Office of the Chief Justice.

Walus was granted parole on November 21 and is set to be released on Thursday, December 1.

“The judgment to release a racist murderer must be rescinded. We make no apology about that,” the party said in a tweet.

Gauteng EFF added: “The Constitutional Court has been reduced to an instrument of white supremacy and an insult to the struggles and pain of black people.”

Polish immigrant Walus was serving a life sentence for the murder of Chris Hani in 1993.

The court ruled on November 21 that the 2020 decision by Justice Minister Ronald Lamola to deny Walus parole irrational.

Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi said that they felt betrayed and could not leave the issue of Walus’ release unattended.

“We can’t fold our arms and allow a miscarriage of justice to happen,” Lesufi said after the ConCourt ruling.

The JMPD said that the traffic flow had been reopened by 11:00 as protesters made their way to the Office of Chief Justice.
