School for visually impaired CBD relocates entrance gate

The petition was passed on November 24, 2022 after the school and the Gauteng Department of Education have been petitioning for the relocation of the entrance since 2017.

Prinshof school for the visually impaired finally had its entrance relocated after years of petitioning.

Formerly on Lewis street, Pretoria Central, the entrance for school for children with special needs will now be moved to Soutpansberg Road.

This move according to MMC for health Rina Marx will go a long way in ensuring the safety of the metro’s learners with special needs.

“The location of the school’s current entrance has placed learners, staff and parents at risk due to crime in front of the school, illegal taxi operations, waste recycling and other nefarious activities,” said Marx.

The MMC said that the school and the Gauteng Department of Education have been unsuccessfully petitioning for the relocation of the entrance since 2017 and out of fear for the safety of the learners then the Solidarity Teacher’s Network approached the metro.

“Soon after being approached to assist, I undertook a visit to the school to get a sense of the extent of the risk to learners. Following my visit, I engaged with my counterpart, the MMC for corporate and shared services, Cllr Kingsley Wakelin, who has played an instrumental role in assisting me to ensure the successful relocation of the entrance,” Marx continued.

The petition was passed on November 24, 2022.

A small portion of land had to be donated to the development of the new entrance.

The school has had a 100% matric pass rate for the last 20 years and accommodates learners from grades R to 12.

“It is through interventions such as these that we aim to convey to residents that our coalition government is working towards building a caring and responsive city,” Marx concluded.
