Sosh police to increase visibility as students return

Most students will be coming back this week and during the weekend looking to start a new academic year.

Soshanguve police have advised landlords to upgrade their security systems as they look to accommodate returning and incoming students.

Soshanguve accommodates a large number of students who are studying at universities and colleges in Tshwane.

Some students are residing at Nsfas-accredited residences while some are just renting around the various houses and backyards mostly in blocks L, LKK, LVV, H, K, and M.

Police spokesperson Constable Nhlanhla Zondi said upgrading and increasing security will help prevent crime.

In most cases, tenants lose their possessions due to break-ins, according to Zondi.

He said students must also make it a priority to rent in places that have lockable gates.

“Landlords planning to have renting students must ensure that rented rooms have lockable gates, doors and burglar bars,” he said.

An influx of new students around the area is expected with the 2022 matric results to be released on January 20.

“Since Soshanguve is experiencing an influx of tertiary students who reside and attend school in the area, there is an increased police visibility to prevent street robberies and car hijackings,” he said.

The police’s crime prevention awareness urged the community to work closely with the police to curb crime in the area.

“We encourage the community to work with us because we must ensure that they are informed of crime patterns and tips on how to prevent crime,” he said.

He added that the CPF, together with SAPS Soshanguve, will hold community meetings to ensure that there is a continued working relationship between the police and the community.

Anyone who falls victim to crime or has information about crime within the area should contact the police anonymously using the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.
