Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane congratulated the matrics of 2022 who, despite the odds stacked against them, achieved an outstanding 84.4% pass rate in the 2022 examinations.
This represented a 1.7% improvement from the 2021 matric results and placed Gauteng as the second top-performing province in South Africa.
“All 15 Gauteng districts performed above 80% with four districts being part of the top 10 districts in the country,” said Chiloane.
“In Tshwane, our schools can be particularly proud. Three of our districts made the top 15 in Gauteng.”
Tshwane South achieved an 89.96% pass rate and is in fourth place nationally. Tshwane North is in ninth place with 83.46% and Tshwane West came in fourth with an 81.98% pass rate.
Chiloane pointed out that more schools in Gauteng achieved a 100% pass rate this year.
In 2021, 131 schools managed a 100% pass rate. The figure rose in 2022 to 149 schools.
Similarly, more schools achieved a pass rate of above 95% in 2022 than in the previous year.
In 2022, a total of 290 schools achieved above 95%, compared to 265 in 2021.
Chiloane also said that more township public schools excelled in the 2022 NSC exams.
“We congratulate the principals of the 107 township public schools,” he said.
These included nine learners with special educational needs (LSEN) schools that achieved a pass rate of above 90%.

Last year, only 61 township public schools achieved above 90%.
Gauteng’s class of 2022 achieved the highest number of Bachelor passes in the country. It is also the highest number in the province since 1996.
“Gauteng has made significant strides in closing the gap between schools serving poor communities, specifically township schools.”
Township schools achieved slightly higher results than in 2021 with township schools achieving a pass rate of 80.7% compared to 79.6%.
Schools that provide skills-based curricula specific to the province’s economic corridors also made strides with eight of them achieving a pass rate of over 90% each.

In Tshwane, three of the top eight Schools of Specialisation can celebrate their achievements.
They are Pro Arte Alphen Park Performing and Creative Arts (97.5%), Soshanguve Engineering (95.3%) and the Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports in Laudium (92.1%).
On a more sombre note, Chiloane said that the department will meet the public schools that performed below 65% to put interventions into place to improve the performance of these schools.
This will include a review of management and teaching personnel. A rapid school evaluation will be undertaken and an academic improvement plan designed and implemented.
“But there is still light for those who have not made it to the top.”
Chiloane said all matriculants who failed will be supported by providing a multi-faceted second chance programme in 2023 to assist candidates who still need to complete their national senior certificate.
