Various law-enforcement agencies held a by-law inspection recently in the CBD.
Mayor Randall Williams led metro agencies including members of the TMPD and SAPS as well as officials from the Economic Development and Spatial Planning Department and the Health Department.
The multi-disciplinary operation aimed to preserve public safety in the CBD and to ensure businesses, liquor shops and other entities are by-law complacent.
Of the 13 business premises that were inspected, four were served opportunity to rectify (OTR) notices, two businesses received fines for operating without a certificate for food premises, and a restaurant received a fine of R5 500 for operating with an expired business licence and fire safety certificate. An additional restaurant and supermarket were also found to be operating without a valid fire safety certificate.
“Our multiparty coalition government will not tolerate any lack of compliance,” said Williams.
“We will continue to conduct these operations in the interest of our residents, and issue fines or even shut down businesses where necessary.”

The operation took place on Steve Biko Street in Arcadia, central Pretoria.
The mayor called on all residents and visitors to obey the metro’s by-laws as they were passed by municipal councils as he believes it will make Tshwane “an orderly city to live and work in”.
“This is our first major law enforcement operation this month and we are planning many more,” Williams concluded.
Residents who are aware of businesses contravening by-law regulations are encouraged to report them to the relevant authorities.
