Centurion matriculants are full of joy after getting results

The majority of the matriculants at Hoërskool Centurion are considering taking a gap year to figure out what they want to study.

Smiles, hugs and congratulatory messages abound among learners this morning at Hoërskool Centurion as they arrived to fetch their results at school.

One of the matriculants, Thorenza Bailie, who got a conditional exemption told Rekord that she would be studying nursing at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Bailie said the year was tough but through her parents’ support and endless encouragement, she managed to pull through.

“I wanted to take a gap year but my parents didn’t want to hear any of that, so I will be studying nursing at TUT. I am empathic at heart, hence I opted to study nursing so that I can take care of other people,” she said.

Another excited learner, Alessia Angelucci, said she would be studying MSC with Tshwane University as well, adding that her grades were good enough to go for her first choice.

“I am so excited now that I am finally a university student, I am going to miss my friends mostly here at the school,” Angelucci said.

Some of the learners were as excited as their counterparts, as they were sure what they wanted to study.

Two other learners, Divan Lottering and Aydon Jansen van Rensburg, told Rekord they were thinking of taking a gap year as they were not sure what is it they wanted to study.

“We are honestly not sure what we want to do, so we have both decided to take a gap year to gather our thoughts on which career to pursue, but we will most definitely go back to school once we have decided.”

However, Lottering said he still had to run the decision by his parents.

“I took the Sol-tech prospectus now, so I will probably take a look and see what I qualify to do then have a chat with my parents to be able to decide on what course I am going to do.”

Eliska van der Westhuizen and Mikyla Wijburg also decided to go the gap year route.

Van der Westhuizen said she was going to join a private company as an intern while figuring out what career path she was going to take.

“I am currently employed as an intern, so I will be spending the rest of the year there. Next year I will probably register and hopefully, I will know what course I will be taking.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Willcock, Benjamin and Rico Cronje’s plans were to become fully-trained businessmen.

The trio told Rekord that they were planning on operating a trading company.

“We are going to start operating as traders, full-time now. The advantage is that we will have a lot of time on our hands and that means more money in our pockets,” they said.
