Land invaders’ property demolished in Mabopane

The Tshwane metro warned residents against building structures on land unlawfully, saying that it will result in demolition.

The Tshwane metro demolished buildings and structures belonging to land invaders in Mabopane unit D on Tuesday.

The team of demolishers acted swiftly to prevent land invasion in the area, according to Tshwane mayor Randall Williams.

Williams said land invasion is a serious problem.

He added that these areas demand services that the metro won’t be able to provide.

“In worst cases, some communities have invaded active floodplains or dry river beds which flood during heavy rainfall creating significant personal risk,” he said.

He advised residents against buying land illegally because it would cause demolishing of their property once they put up a structure.

“Once more, please do not allow anyone to sell you land unless it is through a lawful and legal process. If you erect structures on land unlawfully, they will be demolished,” he said.

Last week, MMC for Human Settlements Kgosietsile Kgosiemang filed criminal charges against land invaders in ward 20, block D, Mabopane.

Kgosiemang said the private landowner, who was working with the metro, has obtained a court interdict to prevent an illegal invasion of the land.

“However, some criminals have defied the court order by continuing to illegally build structures on private land,” he said.

He said this was unacceptable and the offenders must face the full force of the law.

“As the new human settlements MMC, I will not tolerate lawlessness that results in large financial implications for my department,” he said.

He added that land invasion negatively affected all residents and placed an additional strain on the metro’s already stretched budget.

“Illegal land invasion often results in the metro being forced to provide rudimental services that were not budgeted for, thus exhausting the limited budget set aside for planned services,” he said.
