Eskom considering permanent load-shedding for the next two years

Makwana said South Africans should prepare themselves for possible continuous stage two and three outages for the next 24 months.

Eskom chairman Mpho Makwana announced on Sunday that the power utility was considering implementing stage 2 and 3 load-shedding on a permanent basis for the next two years.

Makwana, speaking during a virtual media briefing, said South Africans should prepare themselves for possible continuous stage two and three outages for the next 24 months.

The state-owned power utility stated that the situation is more drastic than they anticipated and they need more time to resolve issues hampering the system.

He added that this permanent state of power outages is planned to give them sufficient space and time for maintenance and to give the country “predictability”.

“The reality, however, is that resolving the problems impacting the performance of the generation coal fleet will take longer than South Africa wants and needs,” Eskom stated in a press release.

“Although the stages of load-shedding have been high and for extended periods of time, this does not indicate that it is approaching blackout.

“In fact, load-shedding is implemented to ensure the appropriate reserve margins are maintained to manage the risk of a blackout.

“Further, both Eskom and the government are expeditiously making efforts to acquire additional generation capacity from existing operations.”
