Mams Koko celebrates 100 years

“Her health is good and she has never been hospitalised and still walks steadily.”

Elizabeth “Koko” Mogudi of Mamelodi West section D4 celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday.

Friends, family, neighbours and church members came to her home to celebrate her life and showered her with gifts.

Koko Mogudi was born on January 7 in 1923, and unfortunately lost both her parents while still a baby.

She later married her late hero-husband Reuben Mogudi, a Lutheran Bapedi church D3 Mamelodi West pastor.

Granddaughter, Ntombikayise Msiza said her grandmother worked as a domestic worker until she went on pension.

She described her grandmother as hardworking and “always been an inspiration to us”.

“Koko has never ceased to motivate us and push us forward to do our best,” said Ntombikayise.

She has been supportive, loving and caring to all of us and the birthday celebration was to thank her for being an incredible grandmother.”

Ntombikayise said her grandmother is an amazing lady who has been totally selfless her whole life.

“Her health is good and she has never been hospitalised in her life and still walks steadily.

“She communicates well too and when enjoying her cup of tea, will tell you about the good old days when she was growing up,” said Ntombikayise.

She said eating a lot of veggies helped her to stay strong and healthy.

“Koko has a sweet tooth. Loves custard and marshmallows.

“Most importantly she is someone you can rely on for advice and she has helped a lot of family members.”

She continues to watch her diet a lot – less salt and sugar – and more veggies, and maize meal is her favourite food.

Among the people there to celebrate with her was pastor Mokadikwa, the current Lutheran Bapedi church pastor.

“He shared stories about our grandmother that were very touching.”

Ntombikayise said her children also said a few words about their mother… “everything was so amazing”.

“Our grandmother was very happy to celebrate her birthday party with everyone and excited to see those she hadn’t in a long time.”

Koko Mogudi’s message to everyone was self-respect, the value of God and good humanity.

“Otherwise she was forever thankful to God for the 100 years,” Ntombikayise said.

Koko was blessed with seven children and lot of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The whole family and friends wished her many more years of good health, overwhelming happiness, amazing grace and perfect peace of mind.
