Central SAPS warn residents about phoney academic institutions
“A number of awareness campaigns and outreach programmes will be carried out to sensitise the masses of these bogus institutions.”
The Central SAPS have warned residents not to get caught by bogus institutions pretending to be enrolled as registered schools this year.
Even though most learners are currently enrolled in school for the 2023 academic year, some parents are still scrabbling looking for a spot for their child.
The police are warning parents to stay clear of unregistered, fake institutions looking to make a quick buck off desperate and unsuspecting parents.
“A number of awareness campaigns and outreach programmes will be carried out to sensitise the masses of these bogus institutions, bogus salesmen and prophets. We are aware of such criminal activities and will continue to fight them but we also need the community to assist the police,” said Central SAPS spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.
The warning extends to tertiary students and job seekers.
Station commander, Brigadier MM Dladla congratulated the matric class of 2022 on their achievements and assured them that the police will be monitoring academic registrations to ensure that there are no disruptions on campuses.
“We urge every person to become more vigilant and if they become aware of such bogus institutions to come forth and report them to not only the police and the Department of Basic Education, but also the Department of Higher Education and the municipality,” Dladla said.
The police assured residents that officers have been deployed to different areas to ensure crime is kept to a minimum and community members don’t fall victim to crime.
“A number of police officers and patrollers have been deployed to monitor the streets and ensure that crime is kept to a minimum. We want to ensure that the masses do not fall victim to bogus sales persons, bogus institutions, common robberies, theft and other related crimes. We are serious,” concluded Nkhumise.
Residents can report any crime via the following contact details, the all-hours SAPS toll-free number 10111 or 08600 10111.
