Tshwane metro slams EFF storming its offices

"All MMCs must return all assets allocated to them including the withdrawal of bodyguards with immediate effect." — EFF regional secretary Tshegofatso Mashabela

The Tshwane metro has strongly condemned the storming of its offices by the EFF on Thursday, calling the action “unacceptable”.

This was after EFF members in Tshwane rejected outgoing mayor Randal Williams’ resignation letter, accusing him of “wanting to fraudulently return to the office of the executive mayor”.

EFF regional secretary Tshegofatso Mashabela told Rekord that Williams voluntarily stated that his resignation, tendered on February 13 ran until midnight on that day.

“In a sudden twist of events, he submitted another letter to retract his resignation, suggesting he will effectively vacate office on February 28,” said Mashabela.

Mashabela said Williams should “understand more than anybody, as a legal practitioner in his own right that his assertions are illegal, unsustainable, and inconsistent with the powers invested in the municipal council to elect a mayor once a vacancy exists”.

“The City is currently without a mayor as nobody can assume the powers of the mayoral office without being elected by the council,” she said.

“This implies there is no municipal government at the moment. As such, all MMCs must return all assets allocated to them including the withdrawal of bodyguards with immediate effect.”

However, according to metro spokesperson Sipho Stuurman, Williams’ initial resignation letter was followed by an amendment to say he would step down on February 28.

“Currently, Peter Sutton is the acting mayor until February 28,” Stuurman said.

Stuurman said the EFF’s actions in Tshwane House on Thursday were in breach of the code of conduct for councillors.
