Waterkloof House preparatory school Celebrates 100 years

Waterkloof House preparatory school (WHPS) celebrated its centenary with a fun-filled programme that included the opening of an old time capsule from its 75th year and burying a new one to be opened in 2048.

Established in 1923, WHPS has been providing high-quality education to generations of boys in Pretoria.

Old-boys, current and past parents, ex- and current staff as well as honoured guests joined the current boys of WHPS in celebrating the historical moment.

To commemorate this milestone, WHPS will be hosting a series of celebratory events throughout the year. The first of the events took place on February 2, the school’s birthday.

Over the following few days, WHPS celebrated with a Founders’ Day Assembly, Centenary Walk, Centenary Assembly and Opening of the new state-of-the-art Centenary Junior Prep Building, and an Old Boys’ Dinner.

“We are honoured to be celebrating 100 years of excellence in education,” said Mark Whitelaw, the headmaster. “Over the past century WHPS, as it is affectionately known, has played a vital role in the lives of countless prep school boys and has been a cornerstone of the Pretoria community. We look forward to sharing this special milestone with everyone who has been part of our journey.”

As part of the celebration, WHPS unearthed a trunk buried 25 years ago. The boys, both young and old, were excited to see old sports equipment and memories from the past, including an old large bulky computer. In its place, a new trunk was buried with items familiar to us now, but that might amaze new boys at the school in 2048.

WHPS’s Open Day will be held on Friday, February 17.

WHPS is an independent school, offering education to Grade 000 and Grade 00 boys and girls, and Grade 0 to Grade 7 boys only, with boarding offered from Grade 3.
