Police officer scammed, robbed in Winterveldt
The victim was held captive for over four hours before the scammers cleaned out his bank account and stole his service pistol.
An off-duty police officer was robbed in Winterveldt on Saturday after falling for a Facebook Marketplace scam.
The police sergeant from Ekurhuleni was robbed of his cellphones, his service pistol as well as R39 000 in cash.
According to Loate police station commander Molefe Makete, the officer responded to a car advert on Facebook Marketplace where people can buy and sell items.
He arranged to meet the seller which was in Winterveldt.
“The sergeant was lured to an address where he met someone who took him to a second address where he was supposed to meet the seller.
“The joy of purchasing a car was short-lived when the officer was accosted by eight men at the second address where he was lured to.
“They forced him to clean out his bank account.
“The officer with his companion were held captive for over four hours,” Makete said.
Makete said an investigation is currently underway to find the culprits.
“No one was hurt, no injuries were reported and a case is under investigation. This issue is very serious in the area and many people fall for these scams.”
He said Winterveldt is a hotspot for such scams.
“We have more than 15 similar cases open with us which are also under investigation.
“This type of crime is prominent in the area. The community was often warned through the media about this scam but they keep on responding to such adverts,” Makete said.
“I have been preaching on national radios and giving locals’ awareness pamphlets cautioning them to do online shopping on authentic websites only.”
Makete said the people committing such crimes do not target local people.
“The scammers always target people from far places because some locals are aware of this scam.”
Makete said people can use these tips to avoid falling for the scam:
– Make sure the area where you arranged to meet is busy and filled with people.
– Buyers must avoid making any transactions before they see a vehicle or test-drive it.
– It’s a good idea to bring a friend or even two.
– Let other friends or family know of your plans.
– View feedback from previous buyers.
– Make a background check on the seller.
