Active Citizens clean up Queen Wilhelmina’s monument

“The amazing team that joined us today picked up litter, swept, scraped, dug and trimmed. In the process, they have renewed this tribute, and rejuvenated the commute of many pedestrians passing it.”

As a prequel to their upcoming April 1 launch, the Active Citizens recently took part in a clean-up of Queen Wilhelmina’s monument in Muckleneuk.

Under the name OKUSHA.AFRICA, the active-citizen project aims to clean up Magnolia Dell Park in Muckleneuk this April 1.

“Tucked away at the bottom end of Florence Ribiero Street in Muckleneuk, Pretoria is a monument to the former namesake of the street, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and the contribution of the Dutch nation to South Africa,” said ward 59 councillor Shaun Wilkinson.

“The amazing team that joined us today picked up litter, swept, scraped, dug and trimmed. In the process, they have renewed this tribute, and rejuvenated the commute of many pedestrians passing it.”

Many areas around the precinct have fallen victim to illegal dumping and a lack of maintenance, and Wilkinson said he hopes that the effort will encourage residents to consider volunteering in the clean-up.

Other stakeholders involved in the effort include Peter Pedlar, Dylan Brewer (owner of the Huckleberry’s Restaurant in Magnolia Del), ward 56 councillor Jarad Frimmel, Stefan Labuschagne and Myda van Greunen.

“Thank you Huckleberry’s Magnolia Dell for the assistance of Sibu and Ndaba, Bright and Patience, and to the kids who joined us. There is still work to be done, but the difference is already remarkable,” Wilkinson continued.

Organiser and private lifelong citizen of Pretoria, Nicky Russell said that through the campaign they hope to inspire residents to take pride in their communities once more.

“To hear the pedestrians remarking that it was cleaner, to see a couple taking an evening photo in the neatened space and to hear from residents that the collapsed branches and undergrowth were a security issue makes it so worthwhile,” Russell remarked.
