Lyttelton police and taxi organisation come together for World Health Day
Drivers and commuters in Centurion had the opportunity to have their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels tested while learning about the importance of health.
Lyttelton SAPS together with Centurion Taxi Organisation(CTO), Netcare 911, and Khuluma family counselling celebrated World Health Day with an information drive.
World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 every year, with the information drive on Tuesday, April 4.
The day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948, and each year is dedicated to a specific health topic of concern.
This year’s World Health Day is titled “Health for all”, with the WHO saying its 75th anniversary is an opportunity to look back at public health successes that have improved quality of life during the last seven decades.
“It is also an opportunity to motivate action to tackle the health challenges of today – and tomorrow,” said the organisation.
Lyttelton SAPS spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said, “The event took place at the Centurion taxi rank and was aimed at informing and educating the commuters and the taxi drivers with regards to the importance of knowing one’s health status”.
He said that drivers and commuters had the opportunity to have their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels tested.
“The personnel from Netcare 911 were on hand to administer the tests and answer any questions that might arise.
“Khuluma family counselling was also available to advise with any trauma issues and family violence situations.”
The event was very well supported by the taxi association as well as the community.
CTO spokesperson Maria Gama said, “We received excellent services from the Netcare 911 healthcare workers.
“Their commitment to providing high-quality care and support is truly admirable, and it is heartening to know that they have made a positive impact on our health and well-being.
“We are grateful for the hard work and professionalism of the Netcare healthcare workers, who are making a significant difference in the lives of our drivers and commuters.”
