A speedster on his motorcycle doing 223 km/h on the N1 in Centurion on Sunday.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson Sello Maremane, the 22-year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon near Centurion.

It is believed the young man told the officers that he was rushing to Krugersdorp for a jolly day.

The man was arrested on the spot and taken to Lyttleton police station, where he was formally charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit.

He appeared in the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s court on Monday and was granted bail of R 1500.

“Excessive speeding remains one of the biggest risks to road safety in the province. The majority of road fatalities are as a result of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous overtaking, especially in the face of oncoming traffic.”

“I would like to urge all law enforcement officers to leave no stone unturned in dealing decisively with those who continue to disregard the rules of the road, thus putting the lives of road users at risk,” said Sello Maremane.
