11 arrested in Gerhardsville truck hijacking case

“The suspects will face charges of hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property,” says Captain Dave Miller.

Lyttelton police have arrested 11 in connection with a truck hijacking on Tuesday, May 2.

Members of Lyttelton police received information about a truck hijacked on the N1 highway between Botha Avenue and John Vorster Drive, according to spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

Local security companies quickly joined the police in the effort.

“Information was received that the goods were being off-loaded at a plot in Gerhardsville and a team was immediately sent to the address where the information was confirmed.

“Two vehicles fled the scene and a high-speed chase ensued. The suspects were not able to get very far due to the quick reaction of the SAPS and the security members,” said Miller.

During the arrest, police found a large amount of cash in one of the getaway vehicles.

Miller said that the suspects will face charges of hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property. The seized cash will be turned over to SARS for further action.

Lyttelton SAPS station commander Brigadier TP Matlala applauded all those involved in taking down the syndicate.

The hijacked truck was carrying cargo worth R1.5-million.
