Mediclinic Muelmed treated their nurses to a special gala event to commemorate International Nurses Day, May 12.
Inspired by the birthdate of Florence Nightingale (believed to be the founder of modern-day nursing) nurses around the globe are celebrated for the services they provide.
The theme was “Care goes further than you think”.

“You don’t become a nurse because of money, you become a nurse because you care for the patients, knowing that you’ll give a lot of yourself, that you’ll laugh with the patient, cry with them. But at the end of the day it’s a very fulfilling career that you can do for the rest of your life,” said Ronel Kruger, a 25-year nursing veteran who began her career as a caretaker in the 1990s and now serves as a unit manager.
Kruger also recounted the tough times nurses faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, stating that they lost one of their fellow nurses and had to deal with difficult circumstances as the pandemic worsened. She praised her fellow nurses for their strength and resilience.
Acting senior nurse in one of the high-care units, Lerato Kaba, said nursing is a calling and those who choose to pursue must be dedicated and have a love for the work.
“Your patients are your priority. I believe as nurses we are here to give them the care they need and render our services as best as we can,” Kaba said.
Kaba, who started as a care worker, said that her nursing journey was not easy but through her dedication, she was able to push through to the position that she is in today.
“I think what I love most about nursing is that feeling of going home knowing that I helped someone today, knowing that we saved lives,” Kaba continued.
Lynette Kampman of the ICU unit won the hospital’s Nursing Excellence Award, and clinical facilitator, Takalani Maimela won a special hamper in a raffle competition.
HR manager, Sta-sia Smit urged the public to be gentler and more respectful of their local nurses as they have to put up with the stresses of difficult patients, difficult families, long hours and doing what needs to be done to save lives.
“Without them, we can’t have life, we can’t have healthcare, and as per the International Nurses Organisation, nurses are our future and we need to take care of them.
“That’s why we want to celebrate them and make them feel valued, cared for and loved,” Smit concluded.
