Alleged drunk police officer to face disciplinary hearing
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi say they are utterly disappointed by the behaviour of the police officer.
A police officer, filmed on Monday by bystanders who alleged he was drunk, has been arrested.
This was confirmed by the police in a statement.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said as the police they were utterly disappointed by the video of one of their own appearing circulating on social media in full police regalia.
Bystanders and eye witnesses alleged on social media the officer was intoxicated.
The incident happened in Proclamation Hill, Pretoria West.
POLICE ISSUE A STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE INCIDENT
Police commissioner Lt-Gen Elias Mawela condemned the incident.
“A criminal case of drunk driving and an internal case in terms of the disciplinary regulations are instituted against the officer and he will face the consequences of his actions,” said Mawela.
In the video, a police officer is seen being pinned by a bystander to the back of a car.
At the same time, a biker believed to have been struck by the officer is seen lying on the ground.
According to bystanders heard speaking on the video, the officer was cornered after he tried to flee the scene.
Police later arrive and, while hiding his face, the cop makes his way into the back seat of the police van.
CASE OF DRUNK DRIVING TO BE OPENED
The Provincial Commissioner said a criminal case of drunk driving would be opened against the member.
The question of whether the officer was deployed in the Pretoria West police station or others in Tshwane was not responded to by the provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo.
