Locals flock to the annual Plaasjapie festival at weekend
Some of the performers at the festival included Dirk van der Westhuizen, Adam Tas, Neil Somers, and Steve Hofmeyr.
Laerskool Swartkop was a hive of activity this past Saturday as the annual Plaasjapie Festival came to town.
From countless food stalls to camel rides, whip cracking, petting zoos, airsoft shooting, rides, games and a packed line-up of musical acts, a little cold weather was not going to stop the fun.
Laerskool Swartkop acting principal, Elrina Geerlings says that it’s the first time that the festival has come to the school and that it intends to host it again in 2024.
“I would like to thank all the parents because, on the B rugby field, they’ve set up a lot of food stalls and put in the effort to make this day possible as well as Maretha and the Plaasjapie’s organisers, and our staff too,” Geerlings says.

FESTIVAL FUNDS GO TO LOCAL SCHOOLS
Organiser of the Plaasjapie Festival, Maretha Bruwer says the event serves as a fundraiser for schools around the area. Bruwer represents an NPO called Die Landgoed which was formed by the locals in the spirit of helping out their community.
“We think that the schools in Valhalla, especially in this area, really need the money. So we’re happy to partner with Laerskool Swartkop, they’ve been really nice to us and even sponsored their sports field to us to host the festival,” Bruwer says.
Some of the performers included Dirk van der Westhuizen, Adam Tas, Neil Somers and Steve Hofmeyr.
Maretha says the Plaasjapie festival aims to bring the same fun next winter.
“We would like to make sure that everyone is safe and free to have a good time,” Bruwer concludes.
