President Ramaphosa to visit Hammanskraal
“I will go and visit the area to make sure sufficient attention is given to the matter.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa made an announcement on Saturday that he will be visiting Hammanskraal to address the cholera outbreak.
Hammanskraal has been at the centre of a recent cholera outbreak which has killed 24 people.
The president made the announcement during a press meeting in Mahikeng.
The death toll in the area has risen to 23 with one death reported in the Free State.
“The cholera outbreak is a matter of concern to me,” Ramaphosa told a room of reporters.
“I have sent our ministers to deal with the situation.
“The minister of Water and Sanitation and the minister of Health are currently dealing with the matter.
“It is their responsibility to deal with these matters and they are coming up with solutions.
“We are also working with the local municipality to come up with solutions.”
On Wednesday, the metro stated the largest allocation of their budget will go towards refurbishing the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant.
“We are committing R450 million and in the next three years R150 million in each year’s budget,” said mayor Cilliers Brink.
City manager Johann Mettler said the contract awarded to CMS, NJR and Blackhead to upgrade the water works was supposed to have been completed in May last year but hit delays.
Mettler said the municipality has increased the capacity of Rooiwal from 110 million litres per day to 250 million litres.
He said the contract was cancelled in August for alleged poor performance and a forensic investigation subsequently found its awarding irregular.
