Local biker helps family in distress

Hugo revved the engine of his bike, blared his horns and flashed his lights at other cars to make way for the Polo.

A local biker has been hailed as a hero after he drove on ahead revving his engine and blaring his horn at cars to make way for a family that was rushing their year-and-two-months-old baby to a hospital.

Martin Hugo was on his way to work on Wednesday morning last week when he saw people with a baby in a Golf who were in visible distress.

A young baby, who is a year and two months old, was having a medical emergency and was being rushed to Eugene Marais Hospital.

According to the boy’s aunt, Charlotte Horn, the boy suffers from epilepsy.

“He had a really bad attack that morning,” Horn told Rekord.

“He was struggling to breathe and his face turned blue.

“We were extremely worried about him.”

The boy’s mother and grandfather were in the car with them at the time.

They were travelling on Fred Nicholson Road towards the Eugene Marias hospital.

However, the timing could not have been worse as it was right at the peak of the morning rush hour at around 06:00.

Hugo’s instincts told him that the little boy needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.

“I was riding behind them and could see something wasn’t right,” said Hugo.

“When I got alongside them, it became clear that the little boy had to go to hospital.
Hugo revved the engine of his bike, blared his horns and flashed his lights at other cars to make way for the Polo.

He even drove in the oncoming lane to make space for them.

Fortunately, Hugo was able to clear traffic and his family arrived at the hospital in time where he was admitted to the emergency ward.

“He went out of his way to help complete strangers,” said a thankful Charlotte.

“We want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for what he did for him.”

Councillor Mari Joubert was also impressed with Hugo’s heroics.

“Not all heroes wear capes, but what Hugo did was extraordinary.

“We came here today at his place of work to thank him for his heroism and potentially saving the life of a stranger.”

The boy was released from the hospital on Saturday.

“On Saturday he was back to being a happy baby, laughing and playing around all thanks to Hugo and the staff at Eugene Marais,” concluded Charlotte.
