Case against three over firearms, roadblock postponed

The three accused from Centurion appeared at the Pretoria magistrate’s court for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and conducting their own roadblock in Olievenhoutbosch Road on Monday.

Three men, who were arrested for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition earlier this week, saw their case postponed to June 19, for formal bail application.

Leonhang Setenane (28), Jabulani Zondo (44), from Thembisa, and Mthokozisi Mhlongo (40) from Malboro Village appeared at Pretoria magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where their criminal case was postponed.

They were arrested after they conducted their own roadblock on Olievenhoutbosch Road in Centurion on Monday, allegedly while in possession of the firearms and ammunition.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said, “It is alleged that on June 12, the members of a taxi association patrol squad were gathering and having a meeting at Olievenhoutbosch Road, in Centurion”.

“The gathering resulted in a roadblock which led to vehicles not being able to pass through.”

Mahanjana said, during their gathering, an informant called the police and alerted them about the roadblock.

She said when the police arrived at the scene, all taxi association patrol squad members were searched.

“Setenane, Zondo, and Mhlongo were then found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They were arrested.”

According to police, their taxi violence task team received information that a local taxi association patrol squad was in possession of unlicensed firearms and obstructing motorists on Olievenhoutbosch Road in Centurion.

Police called for backup

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the team called for backup from the highway patrol unit.

They then proceeded to the scene where the accused were intercepted.

“The police found three pistols that were loaded with ammunition abandoned in the nearby bushes,” said Masondo.

Masondo said the accused face various criminal charges in the cases postponed.

He added that the firearms were taken for ballistic tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of any crime.
