Two-year-old toddler critical in near-drowning incident

Responders performed life-saving measures before the child was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A two-year-old toddler was in critical condition after the child was involved in a near-drowning incident at a home in Valhalla.

The incident occurred just past noon on Sunday, July 2.

Details surrounding exactly what happened are limited at this stage.

Responders performed life-saving measures before the child was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

According to Community Emergency Response Teams (Cert-SA), a response team arrived at the scene of a drowning at a residential home in Centurion at approximately 12:45.

“On arrival, we found that a two-year-old had already been removed from the water.”

Patrollers from the Wierdabrug Sector 2 CPF were also on the scene.

According to Cert-SA, responders from the CPF performed life-saving measures before Netcare911 and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services took over.

Medical personnel continued CPR and performed advanced paramedical interventions before the toddler was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, said Cert-SA.

Rekord previously spoke to Christa Bodasing from ER24, who offered these tips to save someone who is drowning:

– If someone is drowning, get them out of the water immediately. Initiate CPR if they are not breathing.

– Do not stop performing CPR unless the victim starts to breathe on their own.

– Call for an ambulance as quickly as possible. Inform them of your actions so they can send the correct level of care.

– Do not take the person to the hospital in your car. The victim may suffer brain damage while en-route.

– In case of a near drowning, seek medical attention immediately and explain what happened. Secondary drowning can also happen very quickly, especially to children.
