Councillor pleads with Tshwane residents to use water sparingly as reservoirs run dry

Some reservoirs in the city are at about 1% full as the municipality struggles to supply water to residents.

Pretoria residents were urged to use water sparingly as the Tshwane municipality was struggling to supply water to its residents.

This was after many areas in the city were left with little to dry taps recently.

“The metro is doing its best to provide residents with water,” said ward councillor Shaun Wilkinson.

“The Tshwane water department is juggling water levels and seeing which reservoirs on the network can push water to others.

“This is why Carina reservoir dropped from 70% this morning, so to help Klapperkop and Salvokop recover quicker.”

He said the city’s reservoirs needed more water – more than what residents were consuming.

This should be achieved by not throttling anything on the municipality’s network.

But this would be fruitless if there were still residents using too much water.

“I appreciate that residents love gardening, but I want to plead with them not to waste water by watering their gardens right now.”

Another reason why the reservoirs were taking so long to fill up was that most of them were operated manually.

“I have spent all day sorting water trucks in the rest of my ward. And after a quick nibble and a social media update, I will go back to that.”

Wilkinson asked residents to help the municipality by limiting their water usage.

“Just so that we can be able to get the water levels above 50% by Thursday morning.”
