No new development on death of 16-year-old learner

“We have decided to give them space to grieve,” departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona says.

There are still no new developments on the death of 16-year-old Mia Kühn, whose lifeless body was found on the school’s rugby field on Tuesday.

Kühn was a Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Garsfontein.

During a media briefing on Tuesday on the school grounds Gauteng MEC of education Matome Chiloane revealed that Kühn did not die of natural causes.

Chiloane, however, did not want to engage more on the merit of the inquest case as the matter was still investigated by the police.

“I don’t want to go too heavily into the case because I don’t want to jeopardise the police investigations.

“As a department, we will assist the family and provide them with the necessary support and also get learners learning again,” the MEC said on Tuesday.

Speaking with Rekord, Kühn’s grandfather Jeremiah, said his granddaughter went missing from their house around midnight.

The following morning the family reported her missing to police.

At this time details of how Kühn might have gained entry to the school still remain a mystery that both police and school security are trying to resolve.

Chiloane also told the media that his department would also investigate how the body ended up on school premises as schools are closed for the holidays.

Furthermore, the MEC said the department would also provide psychosocial assistance to teachers, learners at the school, and the parents of the deceased.

The MEC had promised to visit the Kühn family to offer words of condolences, however, the departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona told Rekord the visit had been delayed.

“We have decided to give them space to grieve,” Mabona said.

Attempts to get comment from the school were unsuccessful, as they were given orders not to issue a statement until such time a full-blown investigation have been concluded.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo could not be reached for comment.
