Atteridgeville author nominated for upcoming literary award
The Atteridgeville native is planning a nationwide book tour starting in Menlyn soon, where he will be educating readers about the history and culture of Motswako.
Local author, Katlego Rammusa has been nominated for the upcoming 18th SA literary awards for his latest book, Motswako The Beginnings.
The Atteridgeville native also plans on touring Botswana in August to promote his book.
Motswako The Beginnings details the origins, culture and history of Motswako and how its influence became a staple in South African hip-hop.
Though pleased with the nomination, Rammusa says winning at the awards doesn’t interest him much.
“I am not concerned about winning this award but more with creating awareness for writers who have given up on literature to keep writing and submitting their work,” Katlego says.
“I want readers to keep reading local material and support local writers so we can grow the culture of literature in communities we hail from and help our youth become a reading youth.”
The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) alumnus has written five books prior to this one and believes in promoting reading in townships.
Writing in rural communities where students don’t have access to books fuels Katlego’s passion and he is using this opportunity to promote book clubs and reading in Atteridgeville and other townships of Pretoria.
Rammusa holds a national diploma in information technology (communications networks), is a Microsoft-certified solutions expert and is on the Microsoft representative council which he obtained from Broadband College.
Katlego is a past SRC president (2005) of Bataung secondary school in Polokwane, where he was born.
TUT also honoured him with the institutional support award in 2013. He also holds a certificate and diploma in theology and is currently furthering his studies in theology.
Katlego is planning a nationwide book tour starting in Menlyn soon, where he will be educating readers about the history and culture of Motswako.
