Pretoria residents to have coldest night as temperatures drop

More blankets for Pretorians as they are about to face the chilliest Sunday evening

Coldest night expected in Pretoria tonight, as the South African Weather Services warned of a significant decrease in temperatures.

The agency forecast low-level snowfall across parts of South Africa and Lesotho, including Gauteng, from the weekend into Monday.

The agency further said this chance of snowfall in high-lying areas is expected to be up to 20cm.

“The much-anticipated cold front has made landfall over the western parts of South Africa, resulting in significant cooling in daytime temperatures as well as showers and rain.

“Further cooling is expected over the western parts of the country tomorrow, spreading to the central and eastern parts during Sunday and Monday, with maximum temperatures expected to stay below 10°C in most places over the interior,” SAW said.

According to SAW, these extreme conditions are expected to reign over the province mainly on Monday.

“Light snowfall is possible over the extreme eastern Highveld regions and the escarpment of Mpumalanga on Monday, where maximum temperatures will be below 7°C,” the statement read.

The agency said it was constantly monitoring the weather conditions on its system in order to keep the country abreast of things.

“It is strongly advised that the public regularly follow weather forecasts on television, radio as well as social media platforms,” the service emphasised.

Tips on how to drive on a wet road

– Slow down when the road is wet. Avoid slamming on the brakes as this may cause the car to glide.

– Be prepared to move to the left shoulder in case of badly-timed overtaking from the opposite direction.

– Don’t panic when you see oil patches. Slow down gradually and steer through them.

– Approach bends in the road with caution with both hands on the steering wheel.

– Increase your safety cushion by doubling your following distance from three to six seconds.

– Turn on your headlights.
