Snowfall south of Gauteng will not affect Pta temperature
“The snowfall has a small impact on the temperatures we are currently experiencing and has more to do with the cold front.”
Social media users have reported snow in parts of Johannesburg as Gauteng faces a cold front.
South African weather service (Saws) forecaster Tumelo Chiloane told Rekord that the snow in the south of Johannesburg had little bearing on weather in Pretoria.
“The temperature in Johannesburg is slightly lower than it is in Pretoria currently,” said Chiloane.
“The snowfall has a small impact on the temperatures we are currently experiencing and has more to do with the cold front.”
Over the weekend the Saws forecasted that there would be low-level snowfall across parts of South Africa and Lesotho, including Gauteng, from the weekend into Monday.
The agency said the snowfall could be up to 20cm in high-lying areas.

“The much-anticipated cold front has made landfall over the western parts of South Africa, resulting in significant cooling in daytime temperatures as well as showers and rain.
“Further cooling is expected over the western parts of the country tomorrow, spreading to the central and eastern parts during Sunday and Monday, with maximum temperatures expected to stay below 10°C in most places over the interior,” Saws said.
Videos showing snowfall in parts of Johannesburg have been doing the rounds on most social media platforms.
On the West Rand, @thulzonline posted a video of beautiful scenes of snowfall in what looked like an estate.

It is a rare sight of snowfall in Gauteng, which was last experienced almost 40 years ago.
According to reports, the most snowfall in Gauteng was experienced in September 1981, when an accumulation of up to 10cm across the province was recorded.
Saws said residents would experience extreme conditions in the province on Monday.
“Light snowfall is possible over the extreme eastern Highveld regions and the escarpment of Mpumalanga on Monday, where maximum temperatures will be below 7°C.”
