Patients can now rate public hospitals as dept seeks to improve services

Between July and September, patients and the public can use the survey to indicate their satisfaction or dissatisfaction.

Patients at Gauteng public hospitals and clinics can now rate the level of care received.

Patients can now complete the annual patient experience of care (PEC) survey.

Survey forms are accessible at all public health healthcare services.

The MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, said that it is important that all users participate in the survey.

“All users of public health services are encouraged to enquire about the PEC survey at their attending facility where they can be assisted to complete the survey,” she said.

Nkomo-Ralehoko also said through the PEC survey, patients and the public can rate various aspects of facilities, including access to care or services, availability and use of medicines, patient safety, cleanliness, values and attitudes of staff and waiting times.

“Between July and September, patients and the public can use the survey to indicate their satisfaction or dissatisfaction.”

A spokesperson for the MEC, Tshepo Shawa, said that the survey is what the patient or family sees.

“Therefore, it should not be influenced by healthcare workers. The feedback must give a correct picture which in turn will help the Gauteng Department of Health improve and render quality healthcare,” he said.

Shawa added that the health department receives daily complaints related to staff attitude.

“We have undertaken various measures as part of efforts to reduce the number of complaints.

“We will host a quality assurance seminar under the theme of creating a welcoming environment for improved patient experience of care.”

The department will also launch the “I serve with a smile” campaign.

This campaign is aimed at reinforcing the values of “Batho Pele” in service provision, improving staff morale and making healthcare facilities more user-friendly.

According to the health department, patient experience of care survey outcomes for 2022/2023 shows that patient care satisfaction levels are 86.4%.

Patient safety for 2023/24 is 34% due to staff factors and 86% due to patient factors.

Factors contributing to complaints levels in the same period are 15% related to staff attitudes and 19% related to patient care.
