Teenage sensation close to signing for Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns are in advanced talks to sign the youngster after positive discussions with SuperSport United.
Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly in advanced negotiations with SuperSport United to sign teenage sensation Thapelo Maseko.
“The premier league champs have made a breakthrough in their attempt to lure Maseko from their rivals,” reported SABC Sport.
Sundowns’ interest first surfaced during the previous campaign, and they offered a whopping R20-million for the wunderkind but SuperSport rejected the proposal.
In addition to domestic interest, the exceptional teenager also attracted interest from football clubs in Europe.
KVC Westerlo from Belgium was among the teams racing to sign the teen up, but SuperSport United turned down their offers as well.
As things stand, the Tshwane giants are on the verge of bolstering their squad with Maseko’s addition.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are in advanced talks to sign the youngster up after formally opening positive discussions with SuperSport United,” said SABC Sport.
“SABC Sport sources have indicated the Brazilians are pushing to get a deal over the line before the start of the 2023/34 campaign.”
Maseko is, however, still contracted to SuperSport United till 2025, with the team hoping to extend his contract.
Several reports suggested that Sundowns are leading the race and might beat Westerlo to the talented player’s signature.
Although there are no public announcements about Maseko’s future, it seems he will eventually become Sundowns’ fourth signing for the next season.
The Brazilians thus far acquired the services of the versatile Lisiba Nku from Marumo Gallants on a 5-year deal.
This player, who has featured both in defence and attack, made 31 appearances for Gallants last season.
Nku played a key role in the side that reached the CAF Confederations Cup semi-finals.
The second signing was the Argentine Junior Mendiata, who joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC.
Sundowns have also moved continents to acquire Lucas Riberio Costa’s services.
The South American was playing domestic football in Belgium.
