Mayor leads Gauteng government on Rooiwal oversight visit

Brink gave an update to the Gauteng government about the work to upgrade Rooiwal to guarantee a healthy water supply.

Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink visited the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant in an oversight visit on Thursday to check on the progress of the upgrade work to the plant.

Rooiwal has been in the headlines recently because it is a source of water for cholera-ravaged Hammanskraal.

Brink was accompanied by the Gauteng government led by MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs, Mzi Khumalo.

Brink said they were working with Department of Water and Sanitation, National Treasury and Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). Their aim is to source additional funding to resolve the water problems in Hammanskraal.

“It is estimated that the cost of a full rehabilitation and upgrade of Rooiwal is in the region of R4-billion,” Brink added.

To kick-start the partnership, the metro has allocated R450-million towards upgrading Rooiwal over three years, according to the mayor.

The DBSA will be appointed as the independent implementing agent for the project.

Brink said the metro has insisted that no companies implicated in corruption or the Zondo state capture report are awarded any tender.

The metro has also taken active measures to blacklist the companies and tenderpreneurs that were awarded the Phase 1 contract to upgrade Rooiwal and failed to do their work.

Only 60% of Rooiwal upgrades were completed by the joint venture.

“We cannot afford another incident of misused public funds at the expense of our residents,” Brink said during the Rooiwal oversight visit.

Brink thanked the Gauteng government for the visit. He also thanked them for their keen interest in working together to fast-track Rooiwal upgrades and address Hammanskraal water problems.
