67-year-old man gets life in prison for raping minor

The man had repeatedly raped the eight-year-old whenever the grandmother, who he was in a relationship with, left the house to run errands.

A 67-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for raping an eight-year-old girl between 2017 and 2018.

The man was sentenced by the Ga-Rankuwa Regional Court, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the man was registered in the national register of sexual offenders.

“His conviction emanates from incidents that occurred between January 2017 and December 2018 in Klipgat, where the accused stayed with the victim and her grandmother, who he was in a relationship with,” he said.

According to Mamothame, evidence led in court revealed that the man had raped the minor whenever the grandmother left the house to run errands.

It was only in December 2018 that the minor’s aunt noticed the child’s unusual behaviour as she was constantly crying and had stopped playing with her friends.

“Upon enquiring, she told the aunt about her sexual ordeal with the man.

“The matter was reported to the police and she was subsequently taken for a medical check, which confirmed that the child was violated.”

Mamothame said the man was then arrested and later granted R1 000 bail.

He had also pleaded not guilty to the offence.

In aggravation of the sentence, Advocate Mummy Mosonodi urged the court not to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence of life imprisonment.

She further argued that the 67-year-old had taken advantage of a child whom he was supposed to protect.

Magistrate Aggrey Sephoti agreed with the state and remarked that the courts have a responsibility to send a strong message to perpetrators of such offences.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, together with provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, lauded the prosecutor and detective Sergeant Mmaletswai Mathiba for their collaboration in bringing the perpetrator to book.
