Five suspected armed robbers nabbed in undercover op

Lyttelton SAPS detectives will be activated to ensure that the suspects do not get bail and that all outstanding cases against them are joined before the court.

Lyttelton police undercover operations netted five suspected armed robbers on Tuesday, July 18.

The suspects were arrested near the corner of Lenchen Avenue and Heuwel Road in the Centurion CBD around 14:00.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said that the suspects were apprehended with unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

He said that the suspects and the vehicle they travelled in would be linked to various armed robberies in the area.

Lyttelton SAPS undercover unit was tasked with addressing armed robberies in the Lyttelton policing area.

Mavimbela said that during an operation in the CBD, the team noticed a suspicious white sedan with five men.

“After observing their behaviour, the team decided that further investigation was needed and a hard tactical takedown was executed.”

He said two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found.

The team was supported by other SAPS units and private security firm members.

Mavimbela said that Lyttelton SAPS detectives would be activated to ensure that the suspects do not get bail and that all outstanding cases against them are joined before the court.

Lyttelton SAPS commander Brigadier M Toohey has expressed her gratitude to all the members that were involved in the arrest.

Toohey said that the suspects will face the full force of the legal system and the officers of Lyttelton SAPS will do everything in their power to ensure a successful conviction.
