Sanral to close off N1 freeway over the weekend

Sanral wants to install four beams that would hold a new bridge that is being built over the freeway of Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

The N1 freeway will be closed between Rigel Avenue and the R21 interchange over the weekend, Sanral announced on Wednesday.

The road closure comes as the South African National Roads Agency wants to instal four beams that would hold a new bridge that is being built over the freeway of Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

“This disruption is required to allow the placement of pre-cast concrete beams over the N1 national road freeway for the construction of a new bridge for the doubling of Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Erasmusrand,” said Sanral northern region project manager Alan Agaienz.

The agency has advised motorists to use alternative routes on the day.

Agaienz told Rekord that motorists from the northbound should use the R21 off-ramp to Fountains Road while the southbound motorists should use the off-ramp at Rigel Avenue.

However, Agaienz said the road would not be entirely closed as it would only be reduced to two lanes on Saturday.

“Two lanes would be available in the northbound direction at around 15:00, but the road will only be open for 45 minutes. On Sunday the northbound will be open entirely up until 20:00.

“The southbound will also be reduced to two lanes on Sunday for about 45 minutes as well and be closed off again around 20:00 to allow the removal of the two cranes,” he said.

According to the agency, the road would be closed off from around 05:00 to 17:00 on Saturday while the closure on Sunday would be from 07:00 to 18:00.

The road project started in 2018 and was expected to be concluded by September of 2022, however, it was delayed by many factors such as Covid-19.

According to the provincial government, the project cost an estimated R300-million.
