AfriForum embarks on community upliftment project in Pretoria North

Residents write letters explaining their essential needs and place them in drums, then the organisation find ways to meet those needs and provide relief to the residents.

Through its Letters to God initiative, AfriForum has begun to plough back into the underprivileged community in Pretoria North.

Quentin Meyer. AfriForum North’s chairperson said people can write letters detailing their critical needs and drop them in drums put on the streets.

“We set up a drum in Jopie Fourie Street where people can put their letters, and every second Friday of each month, we read the letters and note the needs.”

In the letters, people write down their details, and cellphone numbers as well as a home address for the delivery.

The organisation will then take notice of the needs mentioned in the letters and consider ways to assist.

According to Meyer, this upliftment initiative is referred to as Letters to God.

“This is a kind deed, and we pray for the letters and ask for blessings so that we can keep doing good deeds.”

Meyer said his organisation cannot help everyone or with everything at the same time but mostly can with food parcels, clothing and other essential needs.

Every second Friday after reading the letters, the organisation visits the people with need to hand over food parcels.

On Friday, July 14, six families were given food parcels.

“We did the handover to people in critical need of food. Hopefully, this has been a relief for those families,” Meyer said.

He said they recently read a letter from a young boy asking for a bicycle.

“We asked for donations and in the end, we managed to get the bicycle for the young boy.”

Meyer pleaded with other organisations and community members to help with any food donations and clothing.

“With the help of the community we can certainly do more and assist more people,” he said.

The next collection and handover will be on August 11.
