City of Tshwane granted interim interdict against striking workers

The court order restricts workers from engaging in illegal strike action and also prohibits them from intimidating other city employees.

The Labour Court in Braamfontein has granted the City of Tshwane an interim interdict against striking workers.

This effectively prohibits them from engaging in any illegal activity that disrupts the city’s service delivery or causes destruction of public property.

The interdict is a response to the ongoing strike, which has led to disruptions and damage to public property.

This development comes at a time when the city is already struggling to provide basic services due to financial constraints.

The metro spokesperson Lindela Masigo said that the court declared the strike unlawful and unprotected.

Apart from the workers being restricted from engaging in illegal activities they are also prohibited from intimidating other city workers.

A total of 15 employees have been arrested and charged with public violence and are facing three internal charges which my lead to their dismissal.

Mashigo expressed his confidence that Samwu leadership will respect and comply with the court order and allow workers to return to their duties, ensuring that vital services are provided to residents and customers.

Mashigo also stated that the City is working on a plan to address the backlog of service delivery caused by the strike.

He apologized for any inconvenience to residents and customers as a result of the strike.

“The City remains committed to ensuring that essential services are delivered efficiently and effectively, and that residents and customers are able to access the services they need.”
