Tshwane police arrest 981, recover five firearms

The firearms will be analysed to determine if any were involved in other criminal activity.

Tshwane police announced their successful apprehension of 981 offenders during five separate and highly effective operations last week, showcasing their unwavering commitment to protecting their communities.

The operations started on a Sunday, July 23, in Mamelodi East.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said diligent law enforcement officers arrested 19 undocumented immigrants, one person for driving under the influence of alcohol and another for drinking in public.

“Additionally, six liquor outlets were inspected, resulting in the closure of all six establishments for contravening the Liquor Act, and the confiscation of 508 380ml of liquor, which will be destroyed,” he said.

He added that 19 Aarto traffic infringement notices were issued with a total value of R18 000 and 308 people and 169 vehicles were searched.

Masondo said on Monday, July 24, officers in Temba executed their operation involving inspections of three liquor premises, resulting in the closure of all these premises, and 160 040ml of liquor was confiscated and earmarked for destruction.

Four undocumented immigrants were arrested, along with one person for employing undocumented immigrants, one for possession of drugs, and another for possession of counterfeit cigarettes.

He said three second-hand shops were inspected and subsequently fined for not complying with the Second-hand Goods Act.

He said earlier on Thursday, Operation Shanela had netted 18 undocumented immigrants and six people for possession and dealing in drugs.

Masondo said several ziplock plastic bags containing dagga with a total weight of 3 686kg and other illegal narcotics were confiscated. A total of 222 Aarto traffic infringement notices were issued during a roadblock, totalling R177 400.

Law enforcement personnel searched 1 013 individuals and 550 vehicles during this operation, 13 liquor outlets were inspected, and six were found non-compliant, which resulted in their closing down while 300 190ml of liquor were confiscated.

He added that four illegal firearms were found, and three people were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms which will undergo ballistic analysis to determine if they were involved in other criminal activities.

Masondo said on Friday, Bronkhorstspruit police conducted their anti-crime operation in which 210 persons and 57 vehicles were searched, resulting in the arrest of three illegal immigrants and five people for drunk driving, two for drinking in public and one for possession of drugs.

“Also on Friday, the district destroyed 7 650 590ml of liquor that were confiscated in various operations and compliance inspections in the area.”

Two suspects were also arrested for suspected involvement in truck hijackings while impersonating Gauteng traffic police officers.

“These arrests followed six months of investigation,” Masondo added.

These suspects were in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, car remote jamming equipment, false number plates and several Gauteng traffic police uniforms and equipment.

He said Operation Shanela was conducted on the afternoon of Saturday in Silverton to close the week.

He said this operation, netted at least 307 people for various crimes, including 11 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 42 undocumented immigrants, 15 for drinking in public and three for possession of drugs.

Masondo said the success of all the operations was made possible by the collaboration of multiple stakeholders, including the departments of home affairs, labour, correctional services and community safety. They were joined by Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police as well as crime prevention wardens, Tracker, local councillors, CPFs, and various SAPS members from different units and stations in Tshwane.
