UIF warns of scam now doing the rounds

UIF spokesperson Trevor Hattingh said UIF services are free and the fund would never request money for services.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), an entity of the Department of Employment and Labour, has reiterated that services – including the processing of claims – are free of charge.

This comes after the latest scam doing the rounds on social media.

According to the fund, scammers have been sending messages to unsuspecting victims claiming that an amount of R21 785 is ready to be paid out to them after they pay clearance fee and UIF registration.

UIF spokesperson Trevor Hattingh said UIF services are free and the fund would never request money for services.

“Anyone who receives the message about this latest fraud is urged to discard it immediately to avoid falling prey to these untrustworthy fraudsters. We are urging clients to exercise caution and not fall prey to these scams,” he said.

Clients and the public are urged to be vigilant and help the fund fight fraud and corruption by reporting it to:
– UIF fraud hotline: 0800 601 148
– Department of Employment and Labour hotline: 0860 666 883, or
– National Anti-Corruption Hotline: 0800 701 701.

Clients are advised to visit the nearest labour centre for free assistance.
