Centurion sinkhole leaves residents without water, power
“The strike is making repairs difficult.”
Residents in the vicinity of a newly formed sinkhole in Centurion are without water.
Scores of residents were seen queuing to collect buckets of water for drinking, cooking and sanitation from tankers deployed in the area.
The sinkhole in Burger Street formed overnight on Saturday.
Speaking to Rekord, local ward councillor David Farquharson said the situation was getting worse as there was also no power.
“We are still without water since Saturday, but water tankers will be deployed in the area shortly,” Farquharson said.
He said the metro would send tankers once a day to the affected areas.
On the question of when the water issue would be resolved, the councillor said it was difficult to put in an estimate as there was an ongoing strike.
“The strike is making repairs difficult.”
Farquharson also said the area has been hit by constant power outages due to what he said was cable theft.
He said residents have been subjected to these power outages for weeks, without a solution.
“The power has been on and off for weeks. When power has been restored, then the cables are stolen again.”
Resident Cobe Modisenyane voiced his frustration to Rekord.
“We have been having endless water challenges in Lyttelton now. If it’s not water it’s electricity. The worse part of it all is we pay for our services but you would swear that we are on some indigent policy scheme,” Modisenyane added.
Seleka Beauty, also a resident in the area, said she heard through the grapevine that water tankers would be in the area to provide water to affected residents but she said no one seemed to know when.
“The metro is making provision, we hear, but what about people who are at work in the afternoons and morning? I honestly believe that they are not thinking about some of us who are going to work and all,” added Seleka.
She further said deploying one water tanker a day was not enough for thousands of residents who were without water.
Farquharson said he would ask community members to collect water for their neighbours.
“We will ask people to collect water for their neighbours.”
