Hawks launches manhunt for senior detective murderer

Colonel Frans Mathipa was on duty conducting an investigation when he was shot and killed whilst driving near Hammanskral toll plaza.

The Hawks have launched a multi-disciplinary investigation into the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, with the express purpose of bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Mathipa who was attached to the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation unit in Gauteng was gunned down on Sunday night on the N1 near the Hammanskraal toll plaza.

“He was on duty conducting an investigation when he was shot and killed whilst driving,” said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo.

Mbambo said Mathipa sustained gunshot wounds to the head and lost control of the vehicle, which rolled and landed in the ditch.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A case of murder has been opened at Hammanskraal police station which will be investigated by the Hawks’ serious organised crime investigation team.

Hawks head Lieutenant General Dr Godfrey Lebeya has expressed his deepest condolences to the deceased member’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Lebeya said no effort will be spared in solving this crime.

“The loss of Lieutenant Colonel Mathipa is a tragedy, and the Hawks are committed to honoring his memory by ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions,” Lebeya said.

He strongly condemned the senseless killing of one of the dedicated police officer.

“Mathipa was a devoted investigator who specialised on the crimes against the state cases.”

He said those who attack police officers are a threat to the country.

“We are confident that the investigation team will do a diligent work in apprehending those responsible,” stated Gen Lebeya.
