Women’s Day commemoration moves to Pretoria
In the women's march of 1956, 2 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the legislature aimed at controlling the movement of black women in urban areas.
The National Women’s Day commemoration is to be held tomorrow at the Union Buildings, after a change of venue.
According to the spokesperson for the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Cassius Selala, the commemoration will no longer be held in Khayelitsha, Western Cape and will instead take place at the Union Buildings’ south lawns in Pretoria.
Selala said because of the ongoing taxi strike in Cape Town, Khayelitsha is deemed a high-security risk area.
He said that this year’s theme for Women’s Day/month is “accelerating socio-economic opportunities for women empowerment”.
“The theme is inspired by the five priorities of government outlined by the President during the State of the Nation address in February: to restore energy security, grow the economy and jobs, build better lives and fight corruption, make communities safer and make government work.
“In line with the theme, the department planned on engaging with the public and private sectors to influence an inclusive legislative framework through the implementation of the national strategic plan on empowerment of women and young people.”
Women’s Month marks the anniversary of the great women’s march of 1956, when 2 000 women marched to the Union Buildings to protest laws aimed at controlling the movement of black women in urban areas.
This year’s women’s month commemoration will begin with a symbolic walk from Sammy Marks to the Union Buildings at 07:00 after which the formal programme will begin at 09:00.
The President will give a keynote address alongside Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, Selala as well as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Ncediso Goodenough Zizi Kodwa.
