Tshwane donates soccer, netball equipment to Winterverldt
The Tshwane community and social development department says it aims to empower the youth through sports development and participation.
The Tshwane metro recently distributed soccer and netball poles in Winterveldt.
MMC for community and social development services Peggy de Bruin said this is part of the metro’s strategic effort to nurture sport development in communities.
“The equipment will assist during practices and tournaments, which ultimately remove children from the streets and away from negative influences, such as substance abuse and crime,” De Bruin added.
The distribution was part of the healing process, memorialisation, documentation and preservation of history. It included the commemoration of the Winterveldt massacre at City Rocks soccer field which took place on March 26 1986 and to further strengthen the relationship between the community and municipality, according to De Bruin.
The equipment was handed over to the Winterveldt local football association representative, Winterveldt sports council, Winterveldt netball association and Winterveldt massacre committee.
De Bruin said the equipment comprises two sets of 7-a-side soccer poles, one set of netball poles, and extra nets for future use.
The representatives will jointly manage the equipment and ensure fair usage by the different soccer and netball clubs in the area.
“The metro is implementing various initiatives to promote youth empowerment through sports development and participation, and this is one of them.
“We trust that the equipment will add value towards sports advancement in Winterveldt and help develop home-grown future sports stars,” she said.
Winterveldt resident Johannes Malefo said he is happy that they have received soccer equipment because they haven’t had proper soccer nets for years.
“The equipment will encourage more young boys to participate in soccer,” he added.
Netball coach Nelisiwe Langa said that the new poles will mean more netball practice and winning more tournaments.
